Promo!

Here's the little promo for the Spirit Box workshop - I made in it a sepia tone - not sure why but it is interesting:

Late Fall Workshops - wow!

The topics for the last three workshops of the year are done, and, wow, I can't wait. There are two new ones, a transfer workshop and a spirit box workshop. Here's a sneak preview of the spirit box session:
And here's the complete schedule - brochure to come next week:

Sunday, October 14 (3-5)

Spirit Boxes – Using the same technique of collage for the small shard pins, we’ll create a mixed-media construction for the top of a spirit box. What goes inside? That’s up to you, but I’ll have some suggestions. Materials, including small boxes, provided. Photos to come.

Sunday, October 28 (3-5)
Transfer Workshop – I’m excited about a technique I just learned using rice paper to transfer photographs and graphics (including old letters) to a collage surface. I’ll share this technique with you and, we’ll make transfers of your photos and then embellish them onto a collage for you to take home and treasure. All materials provided, bring your own photos if you like. Photos to come.
Sunday, November 4 (3-5)

Collage on Canvas – I’m offering a new session of this popular workshop for those of you who want to take it for the first time or repeat it. This one will fill quickly. All materials provided, although you are encouraged to bring the focal image for your own collage. See the video for the Sept. 9th workshop for an intro.

Workshop Practice

Tonight I planned out my Collage on Canvas workshop by going through the steps by myself in the studio - this example collage is not quite finished, but I think that it will be both possible and fun to create this project with our group in two hours on Sunday, Sept. 9th. I'm encouraging participants to bring their own central images, but will have lots to choose from if they don't. I love what they always come up with - all different, even using the same steps and process. Here's the video we'll use to get started:

Beading the Shards: Workshop Part Two

This was an amazing creative experience - taking the shard faces and pendants we made in Part One of the clay workshop and enhancing them with beads and cord and embellishments. Ann Pearce, friend and jewelry designer, took the participants through each step, helping them choose beads and colors and wires to transform their earthenware pieces into beautiful one-of-a-kind art to wear. This is definitely a workshop I'd like to repeat. If the videos inspire you and you'd like to participate next time, send me an email!

A Realy BIG Workshop!

I facilitated a hands-on workshop for all the the art teachers in North East ISD this afternoon - we looked at some things from Austin Kleon's book, Steal Like an Artist, and then made some sketchbooks and did collages and drawings. Working with 50 art teachers is like herding cats - interesting but chaotic. They did a lot of good work despite the randomness. I had to talk REALLY LOUD. Everybody, including me, had a lot of fun, and it was great to see some of my old compadres again.I taught art in that district for over 35 years. Yikes!
Thanks to Gloria Hill, the district art consultant, for inviting me.

Wonderful Workshop!

We met at my studio yesterday and enjoyed two hours of making little clay faces and adornments - it went way too fast. I was so glad to share my techniques and press molds and stamps with the participants. Wednesday, after the work is fired, we'll meet at Ann Pearce's jewelry design studio to finish our creations. Fingers crossed for a good firing!

ArteSanAnto Journals

I'm really excited about these new journals. My friend Pat recently suggested that I create some hand-made books with a San Antonio theme for the Nueva Street Gallery. These would not be tacky souvenir stuff, but designs that really celebrated the soul of the city. Here are the first four. They feature windows, old photos, angels from San Fernando, architectural detail - all from San Antonio or the region. I'm taking them to the gallery today - can't wait to hear what they think about this new series called ArteSanAnto. If you like them, that's where they'll be available:

Daybooks

These little books are so lovely to work on - they are small enough to complete in a rather short time, and they are small enough so that they show off a few special embellishments. Here are four that I completed today for the Nueva Street Gallery:

Steal like an artist . . .

I'm stealing this idea - great for getting organized - always an issue in my little studio.

Vacation and Art

I'm in Rehoboth Delaware this weekend enjoying the Eastern Shore. I got to give a workshop in abstract painting (stealing a lot of ideas from Gwen Fox) to my vacation companions, Pat Semmes and our host Victoria Jennings. We've spend the day painting and critiquing. Here are some of our results. It's always interesting to see how different the paintings are even with the same techniques and materials.
